At Taming Trauma, we believe that as a society, we can choose between vengeance and forgiveness. Gandhi said, "An eye for an eye makes us blind," reminding us of the endless cycle of harm that vengeance perpetuates. Instead, we choose mercy, education, and healing as the path forward. The world's major religions all embrace forgiveness, and here, we highlight the values of mercy and reconciliation shared across Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.
In Judaism, forgiveness is not just encouraged — it's a mitzvah (good deed), a sacred responsibility. Jews are taught to seek and offer forgiveness, especially during the Ten Days of Repentance, between Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year) and Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement).
This period emphasizes personal reflection and restoring relationships with those we've wronged. It is a time for both asking for forgiveness and offering it.
Christianity teaches that vengeance belongs to God (Deuteronomy 32:35, Psalm 94:1), but the message of Jesus in the New Testament transforms the understanding of forgiveness.
Jesus challenges us to reject hatred and offer love and forgiveness, even to our enemies. Forgiveness is seen as the path to true peace and reconciliation.
In Islam, forgiveness is a core value, and the Quran urges believers to show mercy and seek reconciliation:
Muslims believe that forgiving others brings great spiritual reward and aligns them with divine mercy.
Forgiveness is a choice – one that leads to healing, closure, and freedom. It allows us to break free from cycles of resentment and violence, and to build a future based on empathy, understanding, and peace. By embracing mercy, we help create a world where healing is possible.
